Medical Elective Programme (MEP)

Our electives take place at 3500m above sea level in Cusco, the oldest city in South America, former capital of the Incan Empire, you will be able to see the magnificent historic legacy left behind by the Incas at archeological sites, as well as the beautiful colonial architecture in the city, and you will experience the local life style and immerse yourself in the fantastic night life.

We started running our MEP in 2005, working with students from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Our elective programs normally last 4 – 10 weeks in length, we currently organize placements in 2 large hospitals in Cusco: Hospital Essalud and Hospital Regional.

Hospital Essalud was founded in 1986 and treats over 100,000 patients annually, with over 280 beds; it has most specialties such as Surgery, Traumatology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Emergency Medicine, etc. It is located in the centre of Cusco.

The Hospital Regional was founded 50 years ago, it has over 150 beds and it has a specialist unit for Tropical Diseases due to the proximity of Cusco to the Amazon Rainforest. The placements we organise at the hospitals are very flexible and we can easily change the specialties that you are attached to after your arrival, if you want us to. Apart from these hospitals we have agreements with many smaller clinics so students will rotate there as well.

We also work with small community clinics in remote areas of the amazon, such as Kiteni and Ivochote. On your elective this is where you will spend a week with our medical students as part of a charitable campaign to provide desperately need medical aid to the local inhabitants, who benefit hugely from the students’ visits.
Students who undertake electives for 6 weeks or more can split their Clinical placements between the hospitals in Cusco and the hospital in Puerto Maldonado, a city in the Amazon basin.
